ABOUT

I was born in Liverpool in 1961, and for nearly all of my life I have been making pictures.  For thirty years I was also a teacher of art.  During this time, I maintained my own practice as an artist, exhibiting and selling occasionally.  Now I devote myself more fully to painting and exhibiting.

 

Since 1997, I have developed a form of painting that combines figurative and non-figurative elements. I often depict objects that have some personal resonance. In some paintings, still-life elements appear, along with their abstract counterparts, while in others, objects are just becoming, or transforming. I am intrigued by the notion of dimensions interacting in liminal spaces. 

 

My paintings are made in layers, often starting off with thin colour that builds to more opaque layers as the painting proceeds.  A variety of mark-making techniques are used to develop textures and other effects.  At times, paint may be removed to achieve or enhance a surface quality.

My paintings are colourful and decorative, and are on a scale suited to the domestic interior.
